Bursitis

What it is:

Keeping your spine mobile and aligned is a key to optimal health:

"A body that is free of nerve interference has more power to heal, think and metabolize. Ninety percent of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by movement of the spine."

Dr. Roger Sperry,
Nobel Prize winner for brain research
In understanding bursitis, it is first important to understand how the body works. Bursas are smooth, slippery surfaces that often lie near joints, between muscles and tendons. Their job is to help muscles and tendons move easily and painlessly.

Sometimes bursas become swollen and inflamed, due to injury or repetitive motion. This causes friction between the muscle and tendon, causing pain. This condition is called bursitis.

Bursitis may be called different things, depending on where the condition occurs. For example, if bursitis occurs in the hip, it is called “hip bursitis.” When bursitis appears in the shoulder, it is called “shoulder bursitis.”

Where it occurs:

Bursitis can appear throughout the body, most commonly occurs in the shoulder and hip area.

The Symptoms:

Patients with bursitis may experience symptoms including:
  • Tenderness in the affected area
  • Pain with movement
  • Swelling
